Lover * Mother* Writer* : Each of these roles has meant the world to Izzy Mulcahy.

But now, as she stands accused of killing her elderly father, she finds the three roles colliding in startling ways. Rather than face the reality of her situation, Izzy - always a dreamer — escapes into another story, that of her namesake, Iseult Gonne.

The other Iseult about whom Izzy writes was a real historical figure, the illegitimate daughter of Maud Gonne. Maud was famous in Ireland and throughout Europe and America at the beginning of the twentieth century for three things — her great beauty, her revolutionary exploits on behalf of Ireland and her role as muse to WB Yeats. Izzy’s interest in her daughter is more than curiosity; she is haunted by certain links between their lives.

AS Izzy sets down Iseult's story and unravels her own past, she comes to understand why she returned to Ireland and the father she hated. But she also realises that when she stands up in court her testimony will have a devastating effect on the two loves of her life: her daughter, Star, and her soulmate, Zach.

"In this wild gamey bodice ripper, John McGahern meets Maeve Binchy": Irish Independent.
